Gynecology and Women’s Health
The Gynecology check-up is a critical part of health maintenance for women. Gynecology visits are often termed preventive visits. Many of my patients ask me if these are preventive visits or not?
My answer is “That depends on what you call prevention”. The gynecology check-up is an examination that looks for diseases in their early stages. By definition, prevention is the avoidance or prevention of a disease. So by definition, the gynecology examination is not preventive in nature. It does, however, prevent death from diseases. For example, the mammogram is a radiological study of the breasts that seeks out masses or other radiological signs of breast cancer. A mammogram can detect breast cancer in its early stages for women who follow the recommended screening. So a mammogram can detect cancer early so it can be successfully treated to prevent death from breast cancer.
The pap smear is a better example of a preventive test. The pap smear is designed to detect precancerous cells on the cervix called dysplastic cells. This condition is easily treated in order to prevent its progression to cervical cancer.
My patients often ask me what more they can do to prevent diseases. The answer is to get an “Integrative Check-Up”. An integrative check up can detect abnormal cellular or body function before it becomes a disease. It’s a great tool to compliment your gynecology check-up or your regular medical check-up. At the Riobe Institute of Integrative Medicine, I combine an Energy based system of medicine in my evaluation and combine this with cutting-edge cellular based testing to provide valuable and powerful information to feel great, prevent diseases and also to help existing diseases improve.
For example, a breast thermogram is an infrared image of the breasts that can detect inflammation and abnormalities in the breasts before they become cancerous masses detected by mammograms. Once these abnormalities are detected on the thermogram.
